The Ten Tree Challenge

Consulting Minister invites NWCUUC participation

Here is how it works:

It starts with you. First you think: “Hey we could do this, with fun and ease. Then you propose a plan to "Faith In Action" Chair Dana Ashrawi for NWCUUC's participation. Your plan could be as simple as "I'm going to post a sign-up sheet at the church and letting 10 volunteers do it in our name." Or if you feel inspired, choose one of the many ways that other congregations came up with or create your own way. Have fun with it!

Different ways that congregations are participating:

Plant trees as a memorial. Plant trees to celebrate a new birth, or a graduation. Find a spot in your community that needs trees. Participate in local tree planting efforts. Give your favorite coffee shop or cafe' a small tree in a pot. Plant or donate a tree to your child's school or park. Plant trees in the inner city. Teach your children. Plant with them. Actions speak louder than words. Give a sapling to each new member who joins your church. Don't want to get your hands dirty? Raise a little money. There are several organizations that will use your money to plant trees in various parts of the globe. Experience the fulfillment that comes with participating in this project!

Why plant trees?

#1 We UUs are hungry for rituals that celebrate and demonstrate our values, nurture our hope, invite us into conscious action, teach and demonstrate our reverence for the interdependent web of existence. Tree planting, (supply and stewardship) could become something of a sacrament to us.

#2-14 Trees: reduces air pollution, give economic benefits to your city, cool, conserve water, reduce the “ reduces heat island effect,” reduce energy and maintenance costs, increase property values, provide shade, beautify our environment, increase wildlife habitat, improve water quality, reduce global warming and climate chance by decreasing the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Tree planting projects build community, and have even been shown to lower crime rates!

There are many ways to support this project. Forward this email to tree lovers- especially friends from other UU congregations. With a $0 budget, and minimal administration, this project has already resulted in 2500+ trees being planted. We're visualizing new urban forests and then making them a reality. We are witnessing and participating in the miracle of life springing forth

The 10 Tree Challenge now has it's own website. Please post on it. Let others know what you have accomplished. Post pictures!

Please invite your friends to join this cause!
