Rev. Schulman graduated Thomas Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, CA in 1989
He began a community ministry promoting spirituality, holistic alternatives and human rights for people treated by the mental health system. He led support groups, classes and workshops in several US cities, also in Canada and Europe. In 1998, Phil started the "Crisis Alternatives Program," a hospital diversion program funded by the NY Office of Mental Health that serves people in crisis by providing peer support alternatives.
In 2001, Phil began parish ministry. He has served the Lakeland UU Fellowship in NJ, the St. John UU Fellowship, and Community UUC in San Antonio TX.
In 2004, Phil founded the 10 Tree Challenge, a project that resulted in UUs from UU congregations from across the nation planting thousands of trees. This tree planting ministry puts our faith into action, provides congregations with earthy rituals, engenders hope and promotes our 7th principle. If you live outside of NW Houston, please consider bringing the 10 Tree Challenge to your congregation.
In April of 09, Phil became NWCUUC's Ministerial Consultant. He is here to help us thrive as individuals and a congregation. His strategy is to encourage us to take our shared ministry seriously, to experience the power and value of the shared mission to provide a spiritual home for all in NW Houston who would embrace a UU form of liberal religion.
Phil serves SWUUC, as a consultant to congregations experiencing conflict, and/or who wish to develop peacemaking skills through the practice of “Compassionate Communication” (see sidebar) aka “Nonviolent Communication.”
Phil is encouraged by recent trends in our UUA, excited for the opportunities before us. He says "We are inviting members and friends to participate in an emerging spirituality, to do inner work while simultaneously working to make the world a place where love and justice are available for all."
Join us and Rev. Phil for services, classes and other activities at NWCUUC. We're proud to have him with us.
